MN-01. Vote the Ticket Straight, Chas. H. Coulter. Cello, 1.25 inch.
Clasp back; backpaper of the Greyer firm of Boston. Probably the earliest
surving pin for a Socialist candidate for state or local office. Coulter
was a leader of the plumbers' union in the unionized shoemaking town of
Brockton, Massachusetts. He is generally considered to be the second Socialist
mayor in the nation, winning election in 1899, 1900, and 1902, while being
temporarily turned out in 1901. Coulter met defeat again in 1903, then ran
for Congress from the state's 14th District in 1904, winning 14 percent
of the vote.
MN-02. Vote Socialist, Campbell for Governor. Cello, 7/8 inches, with
backpaper of Universal Badge of Boston. Jeffrey W. Campbell was the Socialist
nominee for governor of Massachusetts in 1938 and 1940.
