Our Philosophy About Whom to Include

A listing of this kind necessarily involves some value judgments. Should we include every American who ever claimed to be a presidential candidate? Should we include "joke" candidates like Archie Bunker, Snoopy, or the nominee of the Car and Driver Party? Do we include persons who never announced their candidacy, but who were seriously considered by the political leaders of their own party?

Our general philosophy has been, first, to list all Democratic and Republican party nominees, as well as third party candidates who won at least 500 votes. For good measure we added just a few third party candidates who won few or no votes, if they issued political buttons that collectors enjoy collecting. The nominees of the Theocratic party are an example of this latter category.

As far as "hopeful" candidates go, our basic philosophy was to include credible candidates who sought their party's nomination. We also added a few candidates whose names were boosted by serious political leaders.

We welcome feedback regarding which other candidates should be included here. Also, please point out any errors we have made.
